James Herriot was the pen name of James Alfred "Alf" Wight, a British veterinary surgeon who practiced for decades in the Yorkshire Dales. Drawing on his experiences treating farm animals and pets among the local farming communities, he began publishing semi-autobiographical books in the early 1970s, starting with "If Only They Could Talk" (published in Indonesian as "Andai Mereka Bisa Bicara").
Wight wrote under a pseudonym because veterinary regulations of the time restricted advertising by professionals. His warm, often funny accounts of rural veterinary life — later collected and adapted into the popular "All Creatures Great and Small" books and television series — became international bestsellers and remain widely loved for their portrait of countryside life, animals, and the people who care for them.
