René Descartes was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist whose work marks a turning point between medieval scholasticism and modern philosophy. Educated by Jesuits and trained in mathematics, he spent much of his adult life in the Dutch Republic, where he produced the works that would reshape European thought. He is widely regarded as the father of modern Western philosophy and made foundational contributions to analytic geometry, linking algebra and geometry in ways that paved the way for calculus.
His most influential work, Meditations on First Philosophy (1641), set out to establish a foundation for knowledge that could survive radical doubt. By systematically questioning everything that could possibly be doubted — the senses, the body, even mathematics — Descartes arrived at one thing that could not be doubted: the existence of the thinking self, captured in his famous formulation 'Cogito, ergo sum' (I think, therefore I am). From this starting point he attempted to rebuild a system of certain knowledge, addressing the existence of God, the nature of mind and body, and the relationship between them — what later came to be known as Cartesian dualism.
Descartes' Discourse on the Method (1637) laid out a method of inquiry based on doubt, analysis, and systematic reasoning that became a model for scientific and philosophical investigation. His insistence on starting from first principles and his sharp separation of mind from matter influenced centuries of debate in philosophy, theology, and the sciences, and his ideas remain a standard reference point in discussions of knowledge, consciousness, and the scientific method.
