Aristotle

Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher born in Stagira, in northern Greece. He studied for two decades at Plato's Academy in Athens before serving as tutor to the young Alexander the Great and later founding his own school, the Lyceum. Few thinkers in history have had as broad or lasting an influence — his work touched nearly every field of inquiry known in the ancient world, from biology and physics to logic, ethics, rhetoric, and politics.

His political and ethical writings remain central to his legacy. In the Politics, Aristotle examined the structures and purposes of the city-state (polis), comparing forms of government — monarchy, aristocracy, and polity, along with their corrupted counterparts — and arguing that humans are by nature 'political animals' whose flourishing depends on participation in civic life. His Nicomachean Ethics developed the idea of virtue as a mean between extremes and framed the good life as one oriented toward eudaimonia, often translated as 'flourishing' or 'happiness.' The Art of Rhetoric systematically analyzed the techniques of persuasion, distinguishing appeals to character, emotion, and logic — a framework still taught today.

Aristotle's emphasis on empirical observation, careful classification, and logical argument established methods of inquiry that influenced Islamic, Jewish, and Christian scholastic philosophy through the Middle Ages and continued to shape Western science and political thought well into the modern era. His works survive today largely because of careful preservation and translation across centuries and civilizations, a testament to their enduring importance.
