Leo Tolstoy was a Russian writer born into an aristocratic family on his ancestral estate of Yasnaya Polyana. He served briefly in the military during the Crimean War before turning to literature, eventually producing some of the longest and most ambitious novels in the Western canon. Beyond fiction, Tolstoy became known later in life as a moral and religious thinker, advocating for nonviolence, simplicity, and social reform — ideas that influenced figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
His major novels, War and Peace and Anna Karenina, combine sweeping historical narrative with intimate psychological portraits of individual characters, exploring themes of fate, love, family, and the search for meaning against the backdrop of Russian society. His novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich (Kematian Ivan Ilyich), written after Tolstoy's own spiritual crisis, is a stark and unflinching account of a man confronting his mortality and the emptiness of a life lived according to social convention rather than genuine values — widely regarded as one of the finest novellas ever written.
Tolstoy's later years were devoted increasingly to religious and philosophical writing, in which he developed a radical interpretation of Christian ethics centered on nonresistance to evil and rejection of institutional authority. His combined legacy as both a master novelist and a moral philosopher has made him one of the most studied and translated authors in world literature.
