Miguel de Cervantes

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was a Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright, widely considered one of the greatest writers in the Spanish language and a foundational figure of Western literature. He led an eventful life that included military service, years as a captive in Algiers, and long periods of financial hardship before achieving literary success.

His masterwork, Don Quixote, follows an aging nobleman who, inspired by chivalric romances, sets out on a series of misadventures with his loyal squire Sancho Panza. The novel's blend of comedy, satire, and profound humanity has led many scholars to call it the first modern novel. More than four centuries after its publication, Don Quixote remains one of the most translated and widely read works of fiction in the world.
