Lucius Annaeus Seneca, commonly known as Seneca, was a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and advisor to the emperor Nero. Born in Córdoba in the Roman province of Hispania, he rose to prominence in Rome as an orator and politician before being exiled for several years and later recalled to serve as tutor and advisor to the young Nero — a relationship that brought him immense influence and wealth, but ultimately ended in his forced suicide on Nero's orders.
Seneca's philosophical writings, composed largely as essays and letters, present Stoicism in a practical, conversational form aimed at helping readers live well despite the uncertainties of fortune. His Letters from a Stoic (Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium), a collection of letters addressed to a friend, cover topics ranging from the fear of death and the use of time to friendship, wealth, and the pursuit of tranquility. Rather than abstract theorizing, Seneca's letters offer concrete advice for facing adversity, controlling one's reactions to events outside one's control, and living in accordance with reason and virtue.
Seneca's blend of personal candor, literary style, and practical wisdom has made his work enduringly popular far beyond academic philosophy — his writings are frequently cited in modern discussions of resilience, mindfulness, and self-improvement, and Letters from a Stoic remains one of the most widely read introductions to Stoic thought.
