Sun Tzu was an ancient Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher traditionally credited as the author of The Art of War (Sunzi Bingfa), a treatise on military strategy believed to date from the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history. Little is known with certainty about his life, and some historians debate whether the work was written by a single individual or compiled over time, but the text has been attributed to him for over two thousand years.
The Art of War is organized into thirteen chapters, each addressing a different aspect of warfare — from planning and logistics to terrain, deception, and the use of spies. Its central themes emphasize that the greatest victories are those achieved with minimal conflict, that knowledge of oneself and one's opponent is essential to success, and that adaptability and timing often matter more than raw strength. Famous maxims such as 'know your enemy and know yourself' and the idea of winning without fighting have made the text endlessly quotable.
Although written as a military manual, The Art of War has been applied far beyond the battlefield — in business strategy, negotiation, sports, and politics — and remains one of the most widely translated and studied works of classical Chinese literature, valued for its concise, aphoristic insights into competition, conflict, and human psychology.
